Ground report: Treatment of Hindu students in Christian colleges

This real-life episode was sent to IndiaFacts by Jithu from Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The entire text is verbatim except for corrections in spelling and grammar.

For a few months, I studied B.Sc Physics in a local Christian college in Vellore before I got into an Engineering College, as was the common practice at that time, in 1996.  The local college I went to is called ‘Voorhees college.’ It has has some history as Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan studied there.

Anyway, Hindus made up one-third of my class strength. Most of our Professors & lecturers were Christians and honestly had no inclination to teach us. And one such lecturer was Mr. Bharathi Raja, an English lecturer who taught us Ancillary English.

From the first class, he never taught us anything related to the subject but would start preaching about how God saved him from a life of sin. In his second class, he started disparaging Hindu Gods. He was ridiculing Ganesha, Hanuman etc.

Of course, a few of us were offended, but kept quiet for the time being. But he never stopped his preaching. He emphatically said that Vedas and Hindu scriptures were all garbage when I tried debating with him. One such afternoon, when there were only Hindu students in the class, he said that he could speak to God, and he could have interactions with him. He said that he can literally speak aloud in front of anyone to Jesus. So my friend and I challenged him to do so right in front of the class. He closed his eyes and started uttering nonsense. There was no language but just some jumbled syllables which made no sense whatsoever.  It was so preposterous that we were all laughing, silently of course. At the end of his “talking to Jesus” he returned to Tamil asking blessings for us and to forgive us of our sins. That was that.

The next day he comes in to the class, looks at me and my friend and says that since it was a Christian college, he is entitled to preach and convert in the class and that we can do nothing about it. If we didn’t like what he was doing we were free to not attend his classes but of course we would be marked absent. But thankfully I got an admission in an Engg college and left this one.
Second incident, this is not from my personal experience but know of events that took place in a Girls Christian institution, again in Vellore, called Auxilum College. My sisters studied there. They would never give holidays for  Vinayag(k)a Chaturthi (Ganesha festival). The college had a custom of punishing all those girl students who didn’t attend school and remained home to celebrate Vinayaka Chaturthi. The next day when these girls returned to school, some sort of punishment awaited them.

On one such year, they made the students to displace/lift some rocks or bricks from one place to another in the afternoon sun, a task which was usually undertaken by construction workers. One of the girls was bitten by a scorpion when she moved the bricks. I am not sure if she died or was taken seriously ill, but this incident was reported by ‘Junior Vikatan.’

    In Mathew
chapter 10, Jesus Christ says, “I came not to send peace, but sword. I
came to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and the
    daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

    In St. Luke
chapter 22 Jesus advises his disciples to sell their cloaks and buy swords.

    In the third
chapter of Romans,St. Paul offered this astounding justification for
falsehood. He says, “For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my
    lie unto his glory”.

    In second
Corinthians Paul further acknowledges his use of falsehood in his teaching. He
says, “Being crafty, I caught you with guile”.

    Those are
some of biblical morals which x-Ian zealots follow whenever and wherever the get a chance.

This kind of bullshit is not something inherent to christians. It happens due to a lack of law enforcement and a culture of bullying that exists in a country. There are christians in the united states for example. But if any professors dares to act in this manner with a non christian student he will nto only lose his job but also be subject to lawsuits for violating the civil rights of the student. – That in India, this sort of nonsense goes unpunished is a reflection on the state of law and order in India rather than the christians.

And you writing this article, somehow holding all christians responsible for the act of an asshole teacher is the reverse kind of bigotry.

Thats why in Maharashtra no such problems with Christian institutes. The Shiv Sena makes sure that Hindus are well looked after in minority run institutions. Thats why even though every non-Marathi hates them I love them because they are more patriotic and Hindu than imbecile BJP. In saying this Shiv Sena never asks its Muslim or Christian sainiks to convert.

This is very concerning and very glad that this information is being shared. We need more people to come out and share. Christian schools are not doing any service to India. They are here simply to spread their religion. As an example, even though that aryan invasion theory has been debunked scientifically
across academics globally, some history curriculum books especially in
christian schools in south India still promote that for obvious selfish
    reasons.

I too thought (till about a decade ago) that aryan invaders
came from the north and subdued the native people of India and imposed
their culture until after reading scientific proofs (e.g. works of scholars Dr. Nicholas Kazanas, Dr. N.S. Rajaram, and others ), I realized that it was all hogwash theory invented by the
british colonials to undermine the Indian history and civilization and
to create the north-south divide. Such clever and devious thinking from
them that we are still suffering today from the ill-effects of that theory
implanted in our curriculum and psyche! There are still many so-called
Macaulay’s children(most of them educated in Christian schools) in the Indian academia and media that support that
theory for their own selfish reasons e.g. for fat lucrative postings and contracts in western universities like Harvard,Oxford etc. the history curriculum across the school system needs to be updated to reflect the true history of India. We cannot let status quo continue because teaching outdated and incorrect history of your nation is doing a huge disservice to the people and is a question of identity and national unity. I do sincerely hope that future children of India are taught an
accurate version of the history of their motherland.

Hydearabad in present doesn’t have good hindu culture oriented schools either in cbse, icse or ssc curricullum schools. If any body has information please do share.

    • Globalaryan says:

I think the need is for schools that just teach secular values instead of certain religion. I think India (Govt.) did do huge blunder by allowing Xtian schools. Schools in India should be just for education and should be completely secular and in terms of history teach the TRUE history of India from an unbiased perspective and not the history version taught currently which is full of western biases and mis-information that promotes division in society especially the north south divide based on aryan invasion/migration theory. A lot of damage has been done to India because of that. It can be repaired though with proper thinking and planning.

And the next is my brother went to get admission for my niece in some Christian school and their 1 instruction for my brother is that he should not be religious fundamentalist and they said that what they teach in the school is humanity and not Christianity… Means they are clearly saying Christianity means humanity and my brother should not raise any questions if they impose Christianity in to the mind of a small child in the name of Christianity. And we Hindus tolerate such nonsense on the name of good education for our children. These Christian schools must be monitored by governments very keenly. They are the conversion factories…

  12. Girish Bellad says:

This same insident I heard from a friend from Chennai. She studied in Christian school and the school never gave holidays on Hindu festivals. And keep some tests next day of the Hindu festival so that Hindu students cannot enjoy their festival and instead they must study for tests.

My cousin studied at St.pious Hyderabad where girls never allowed to wear bindi/tilak and were taken to church within the compound, on every Hindu festival days be it nagpanchami, uttarayan etc.. needless to say Bibles sent home too by book-post without raising a reauest.

    • Rajalakshmi J says:

Very true. Christians attempt to turn everything monochromatic. Not just in schools , in many corporate offices also today most women do not wear bindi . However there are many crypto christians who sport bindi , bangles having Hindu names. On the whole they are extremely knavish.
