The Marxist Devil is real and he hates free speech

Note: This is a guest article by Neha Srivastava.

Lots of politicians and their supporters have been hurling “paid media” allegations at media houses lately, but this is not about that. I am here to talk about a much deep-rooted problem than just skewing news reports for money. Its true that the intellectual discourse in India is not unbiased, its not neutral. But this is not about money at all, this is about power and control over the narrative, its about shaping the ideology of the masses, this is about skewing the discourse so much that opposing voices are summarily suffocated. This is about the Marxist Devil. And this is about the Nazification of Indian intelligentsia.

In a democracy, journalism is said to serve the role of a “fourth estate”, acting as a watchdog on the workings of the government. Journalistic integrity is based on three principles: truth, disclosure, and editorial independence but somehow the first two tenets of Journalistic Integrity have been completely overpowered by the third, thereby reducing the once revered profession to a propaganda machine. Time and again we have seen editors with an agenda, trying to feed their ideologies through everyday reportage to their readers. The subtle way of doing this is by a cunning choice of words & setting the tone in a manner which shows a level of contempt towards anything divergent to or opposing their ideologies, and all the while using superfluous, flowery descriptions when reporting anything supportive of their ideology. Often this method is masked as freedom of expression and editorial independence, yet many forget that it is not honest journalism if you do not fully disclose your proclivities.

It’s absolutely fine to have an ideology–after all editors/reporters are human too, but pretending to be neutral, while furthering their agenda is intellectual dishonesty. Take the very recent case of Ashutosh, a IBN7 Managing Editor who quit his job and joined Aam Aadmi Party. Now, quitting journalism and joining politics is not a crime but if you think about it, its not like someone develops an ideology in a few hours. Did he ever disclose his fondness towards Aam Aadmi Party’s ideological stance for the 10 months that he was working as a “neutral journalist”? Did he refrain from reporting on politics? Did he show any intellectual honesty towards his previous-profession?

The not-so-subtle and rather heinous way of furthering an agenda is by reporting partial truth, misreporting (and then under-reporting the correction when exposed) or even killing stories, all to either attack the opponents of their ideology or to protect their ideological sympathizers. The most prominent example of this was the sustained vilification of Narendra Modi for 10 plus, a vile project which is still ongoing. Favorable reports are quashed or not given due importance but “Blow to Modi” reports become headlines & get hours of coverage via TV debates, op-eds and so on.

Oh, but the bias is limited to media…Is it?

Lets take a look at what we have been taught so far. Having completed my primary & secondary education in India, I have witnessed first-hand the bias in the discourse. 12 years of history lessons do a brilliant job of enforcing a distorted version of Indian history. Pre-independence history recognizes Mughals as the benevolent monarchs who shaped India, when in fact most of them were tyrants and took pride in destroying Hindu temples and murdering/enslaving the native population of the region they conquered. Ashoka is great, but no Hindu ruler is given his due share in history. If it weren’t for TV, Shivaji wouldn’t even be a recognizable name for non-marathi youth. This is what we can safely call as the “Romila Thaparification” of Indian education. Ask any Indian student and he will tell you that Gandhi and Nehru were the most important faces of the Indian freedom struggle. If the kid is genuinely interested in history, he might also recognize some other names like Sardar Patel or Subash Bose but only as side characters. The bias is so extreme that Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev & Rajguru were mentioned as terrorists in ICSE & NCERT history books until 2011, when a litigation forced the board to remove that reference.

Post-independence history is just as skewed, as it begins with Nehru and ends with Rajiv Gandhi. Indira Gandhi, the first woman PM of India comes out a clear winner, and of course, the Emergency barely gets a one-sentence mention. There is negligible reference to JP Movement, which shook the collective conscience of the country. Rajiv Gandhi is apparently the father of the IT revolution, but students aren’t informed about LTTE/Srilanka episode and its aftermath on India. There is no mention of the Shahbano case, a landmark judgement which changed the Indian political scenario forever and is inseparable from Rajiv Gandhi’s politics. The contributions of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay and many other stalwarts have been omitted forever from Indian education system.

Whenever these concerns of biased intellectual discourse are raised, they are dismissed by saying “Why do people with opposing views not work to present their side of the story? Why do they not write books on these issues?” Oh, but they do! Several authors have done their bit to expose the sham of alleged historians like Guha, Irfan Habib & Romila Thapar, who have done everything to mutilate Indian history. Most prominent among them has been Arun Shourie, whose book “Eminent Historians: Their Technology, Their Line, Their Fraud” has done a beautiful job of exposing the bias but has he ever been celebrated as an author like that one-book-wonder cum seditionist, Arundhati Roy? Does he get invited to lit-fests, interviews or debates?

Similar biases also exist in the publishing industry. Even if an author with an opposing view (read: non-communist view) would find a sympathetic publishing house, she would never be given her rightful seat on the table. She would never be invited in any conference or debate on this topic, her voice would be curbed to the maximum extent possible.

Publishing houses which do not subscribe to the left ideology often aren’t big enough or fearless enough to publish views that might ruffle a few feathers. Most don’t have the courage to face years of litigation even if they can win. Media house owners are worried about being on the wrong side of powerful politicians. The Communist/Marxist/JNU version of the discourse has successfully conquered the intelligentsia as it stands today and comply-or-perish is the rule of the jungle.

However, there is a silver lining in the clouds. The advent of the Internet has effectively shaken up the foundations of this well-entrenched nexus. The Internet is giving people easy, quick and free access to opposing and divergent views. Today, when schools students research material for their history papers, Arun Shourie, Sitaram Goel, Francois Gautier or Koenraad Elst turn up in the Google search results. These names have become popular, their interviews/debates, however few, have garnered large numbers of hits on the Internet. Some of these authors are even on social media sites where they have acquired tens of thousands of followers. The best example of this phenomenon was seen in the Wendy Doniger case, where a petitioner offended by Wendy’s version of Hindus, Hinduism and Indian history and her misleading portrayal of Hinduism, sued her and the publisher. Penguin India, the publisher agreed to pulp the book in an out-of-court settlement.

When social media discovered the issue, within a matter of hours, Rajiv Malhotra became part of the conversation as he had been writing about Wendy’s bias for years. People wanted to know his side of the story. He aired them and thousands listened. Not everyone agreed with him, but he had a seat on the table, he was being heard, and for the non-leftist writers of the India, this is no small feat. In short, the world has found one medium which is not under the control of the Marxist nexus, YET. This, quite expectedly, made a lot of people very uneasy. It includes those who had compromised their honesty and those who have been the forerunners of the nexus.

Either way, the Internet is ruffling the feathers of those who have been oppressing freedom of expression for years. No wonder, UPA Home Minister Shinde, wants to “crush” social-media. Let’s see how long our newfound freedom lasts, but until it does, I say, let us speak and speak out and speak LOUDLY!

  6. I came late to the discussion as I saw this article now only. A very beautiful write up regarding Leftist oriented publishing houses and leftist authors. Recently, an award winning author, Mr.Joe De Cruz, found to his dismay that he was shown the door for his fault of praising Modi. In this case, the agreement already made to publish his book, was cancelled. Mr.Cruz was firm in his stand that his personal view about Modi is not in any way connected with publishing his Book. The publisher is at Delhi. This is the trend. We, the readers should teach these authors/publishers a lesson by supporting Shourie, Rajiv Malhothra, Sitaram Goel, Abdul Kalam etc. whose books should make many reprints.

Fantastic article Neha. Keep it up. You have put in simple yet very effective and truthful words the suppressed feelings of millions. But as you said, no more…… the social media is slowly yet steadily unmasking these pseudo-historians and self-proclaimed custodians of Indian history. http://www.hitxp.com/articles/ is one such website which brings out the truth. The guy is amazing.

  8. T R KAKKAR says:

Neha , I have read every word of your article so beautifully woven in words and views of the right thinking Indians . The expression is so flawless that I have neither the mind nor the heart to interpolate any new world or sentence .
Our historians down the ages have deliberately tried to let down the ancient culture and the people only to get a few extra crumbs for masters of the times realising fully well that the meal indian people , generally , may not object to their misdeeds . This may not be purely history but is certainly part of historical data that since the independence more than 17000 foundation stones have been laid in the name of Nehru , India nd rajive only , perhaps for want of any other worthy historical figure .
Let us hope that after 2014 there will be sincere attempt by the new leaders to do justice to our history and our worthy sons of the soil will get better portrayed in the history of India ..

Excellent piece, leftists are nothing but pests & termites, I think we should also hunt them down just like how US did some decades ago.

Ms Neha srivastava you are 100 % right, i also believed the babar and akbar and gandhi and nehru, once internet comes i also read a lot and understand the what is history, pre mugals, and how these foreign invaders entered and changed our culture tradition and knowledge, everything nothing left, and after that Britishers and later the post independent congress, still the villagers are like me, find the way to change them and they should also know , how was india pre mugals and before Britishers , moreover the main point is these congress is not the same old congress which was created for to get independence, so many things has to be changed, then we have to bring back the old traditional medicines which our ancestors made, Ayurveda and so many country medicines, i also read one article by an iitan about the education system before British came , all caste are studying these people came and spoiled, first all indians should know about that, . so many things bring out all , we appreciate your effort

Great article! Social media has partially evened the scales and provided an outlet past the “secular” gatekeepers who control the media, book publishing and the telling of our history. However, there is no substitute for having at least one sympathetic television news outlet that can counter the mass disinformation campaign from the current paid media. There is obviously some remunerative value in owning one of these channels, otherwise the Ambanis and the Birlas will not have bothered to pay good money for their respective outlets. These are shrewd businessmen who don’t run operations which don’t pay back value in some manner. So it isn’t the cost of running a news outfit that dissuades a pro-BJP cable channel from coming into being; it is that currently there is no value for these businessmen to challenge the current status quo controlled by the entrenched and deeply corrupt ruling Congress party. If the NDA ever comes to power, then the value proposition will change and the paid media would soon be singing a different tune. One can sense a slight shift already taking place as they hedge their bets, but old ingrained habits die hard. Besides many in the paid media are deeply vested in the anti-BJP front and cut their moorings a long time ago. They have nowhere else to go but to cling for life to their sinking ship and to assorted flotsam and jetsam (the AAP) that they hope will still save the day for them. The BJP and like-minded nationalists should know that it is the cornered rat that is the most dangerous.

    • Agreed ! Political patronage is critical for any of our initiatives to survive. Lets see what the future unfolds, it does look promising though.

      • Ram Sharma says:

Neha, great. An hour ago a family member sent me your essay, and I was extremely delighted to read it. For past a few years I have been fighting against the elitist JNU Communists in Kafila and Hindu daily. In beginning, they allowed me a few comments, as I made my point by using non-Hindu, and sometimes even leftist scholars, to demolish their anti-Hindu and anti-India posts. But soon they realized I am not one of them, and started deleting my opinions on the pretext of moderation. Only recently I again tried to expose their falsehood regarding Doniger’s book,, and succeeded a couple of times, but they allow me no more to comment. They speak very loudly in favor of free speech, but have no shame in suppressing free speech when one is not in agreement. I was fortunate enough to arrange a talk by Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay in Gorakhpur a long time ago, and I am a strong supporter of Narendra Modi. In my opinion, he represents an unparalleled phenomenon on Indian political horizon that was needed for quite some time. The Communist cancer must be removed form the body of mother India, and the anti-national Khajariwal and his AAP must be annihilated in the 2014 elections for India to shine. I will eagerly look for your nationalist essays.

  12. anu raj says:

well done Neha Srivastava and Ohm .i once questioned kanchan gupta of niticentral, his reply was do you know what is the cost of running a channel.fact is they can earn lot of money by just doing it because there are many person who wants to see other point of view and as all know with increasing viewership advertisers will come. social media is becoming very popular and becoming voice of the people but still lot of Indians either do not have resources for social media or they are not so much technical savvy

    • Ohm says:

That’s the point. There are hundreds of millionaires in india who want to do so something for the country. It is for some of the so called leaders to inspire them to work. The argument about lack of money is only an excuse. Sorry to say, nationalists in India have been found wanting on that aspect, at least with regard to spreading the message about their good work. The reason I believe probably has to do with The inherent simplistic nature of Hinduism and it’s ultimate philosophy that whatever you see outside of you is not real, but only maya. It may be true in a spiritual sense, but while living in a practical world, we need to strategise and prioritise. This is exactly what I called the Arjuna syndrome. Imagine, Krishna had to shoe his viswaroopa and prove to Arjuna that he is the supreme soul to awaken him. Such lethargy! Add to this is the conspiracy that is being plotted against the nation. In kerala, jamaat-e-islami didn’t require an year to get a licence for their channel Media One and to get it going. A similar effort by a group of nationalists to start a channel by name Janam has been stuck for long now because the central government has apparently made it clear that they will not grant licence any time soon. The nation needs to wake up from the slumber it has pulled itself into. That is not to finish off the religious and cultural diversities of the world, but to protect them. Any further slumber on our part will be criminal.

  13. Hindu says:

Should we reflect on ourselves on this?

Why did we allow to continue, why are we still allowing? When are we going to learn lessons?

Why we were ruled for so many years?

We have powerful gaddhars who have been bought by outside agencies- these are utmost selfish people, look at their family trees?

We have got to stop this. The only way we can stop is by stopping ourselves of being colonial slaves. We have got to bring respect back in our own people and be proud of our rich heritage, culture, languages and religion. We got to bring back this pride in us.

    • Indeed and a lot depends on political patronage to make this ideology mainstream. I think with the rise of NaMo, more people are getting awakened and attracted towards this. But we should also pass this mindset, the understanding of our culture, the pride towards our nation and perhaps even religion to our future generations so that this campaign doesn’t live any longer than it already has.

  14. Ohm says:

Well conceived. The story should also prompt all right thinking Indian’s to sit up and wonder why they have still not been able to find their own modes of communication – other than the internet. Founders of organisations which took up the Hindu cause were visionaries and did whatever little they could in communicating their ideas by establishing media like the organiser and panchajanya, not to forget some vernacular dailies. But what happenned since? The organiser which I must say is a promising brand still has just one edition and has disappeared from news stands (atleast in South India) where it used to be present two decades back. Ask any Sanghi in charge why don’t you pool resources and start a tv channel or expand the activities of your publications, prompt comes the reply – we didn’t grow because of the media. The message is that the ideology can grow without the media help. But then the moment there is negative campaign on MSM, they cry aloud – ‘media is so biased to us’. The sangh has dozens of social and cultural outfits which do a yeoman’s job in their areas of work, their activities are never reported by the MSM. RSS relief operations in uttarakhand were blacked out by the very same MSM which goes gaga over some nun in a forest area serving the tribals (only to convert the gullible lot). Why does this happen? How long can the nationalists survive by relying on the anti-nationals to promote them? Will Indians ever learn their lessons and stop being in the mode of denial? No one can underestimate the significance of communication in today’s world. But will those who have taken upon themselves the duty of saving Hindus listen? Will they get rid of the Arjuna syndrome they have bound themselves into? Will someone tell them that organiser and panchajanya are not what the whole 1 billion Indians read? No other organisation in the world perhaps go has such a dedicated and patriotic team of volunteers than the sangh and it’s offshoots. They toil day in and out for their cause, but when it comes to communicating their work, they fail. Reason? The wrong tools deliver tools. That’s where the leaders matter. But here again, we have a team of leaders who are more happy patting each other’s back than look outside. What they don’t realise is that having declared themselves as the messengers of hope for the nation, their action as well as inaction will have a bearing on the fate of the people too. NaMo is a different breed altogether which is why he built his own groups like the CAG for carrying out his programmes. Had he left it to the “well oiled machinery” (as the sangh machinery is often refereed to by MSM), Modi could safely have assured his defeat. Hope the stalwarts of the nationalist cause take some lessons from him and brace for he future.

    • Very well argued sir, couldn’t have agreed more. While writing this piece and even before that, I have pondered long and hard over this and come to the same conclusion as you. I think part of the reason, there has been an unabated, sustained Modi-bashing campaign of varying degrees from all quarters of this machinery has been because they have realized that perhaps NaMo is an existential threat to this system. Perhaps things will change for the better, perhaps NaMo will teach a thing or two to others and we will see more visionaries like him. Perhaps..

But for now all we can do is hope and keep doing our bit.

  15. tapan says:

Excellent article, please get it also published as counter point in MSM as well as sites such as Firstpost on net.

    • Thank you for your encouragement. This article was written exclusively for IndiaFacts and I am thankful to the team of IndiaFacts for giving me the opportunity to raise my voice when most media outlets either want us to “tone it down”, or not “attack” an ideology for reasons described in the article itself 🙂

  16. BTW, who filed the case against ICSE text book calling Bhagat Singh a terrorists- none other than the much maligned, “Book-Ban-Man” Dina Nath Batra!

And who fought the case against him (and lost)?- The one and the only, Prashant Bhushan!!
