Who Really got the Divine Mango: Gaṇeśa or Kārthikeya?
Dhārmic traditions rarely stipulate hard and fast rules which makes them the most natural and the most evolved of all traditions. This freedom is what paves the way to higher possibilities in life experiences. This said, there is one fixed rule to exercise this freedom: Exercising this freedom must not violate dharmā; in short, it must be responsibly exercised.
We have vast amounts of oral, literary, historic, artistic and cultural traditions in each region – nay each hamlet – of Bhārata. Each aspect in each of these traditions in each of these regions in each of these hamlets can be interpreted in innumerable ways: within the domain of dharma. This is the reason why we have hundreds of re-tellings of our epics and classics and each one is a masterpiece by itself. We never tire of listening to the same stories from our itihāsas and our purānās over and over and over and over again. As we evolve, so does our grasp on dharmā and this causes us to experience a new freshness each time we read or listen to these.
One of my childhood favourite stories is that of Gaṇeśa and Kārthikeya* vying for the divine mango. Below, I am providing different perspectives with which I have been able to interpret this beautiful story.
Who gets the Mango: Gaṇeśa or Kārthikeya?
Once, Nāradā brought a mango to Śiva and Pārvati and said, “Dear Mother and Father, this mango is divine.” When Śiva was about to cut it to be shared, he interrupted, “No, this mango is to be had by only one person!” Śiva immediately gave it to Pārvati but she did not want to have anything without sharing it with Śiva. They now had to give it to either Gaṇeśa or to Kārthikeya*. Soon, a quarrel erupted between the two boys on who was more deserving of the mango. In order to settle the issue, Pārvati interrupted and set a contest for them, the winner of which would be the one to get the mango: The one to go around the world first would be declared the winner of the mango. And so, Murugan*, the strong and athletic one – who would lead the gods as their general in the war against Sūrapadman – mounted his peacock and set off.
The stout and clumsy Gaṇeśa glanced at his own vahana, the Mūṣika and knew that there was no way they could pull it off.
He requested his parents to sit down together, circumambulated them and prostrated to them.
He had won the mango! When Shanmukhā* returned, he was greatly enraged but yet, the mango was not his!
Velāyuda* walked away in a huff and would not return despite the entreaty of his parents. On the way, Avvayār, the great Śaivite poetess, who also happens to be the most ardent devotee of Gaṇeśa, met him. By the grace of Śiva and Pārvati, she knew the reason for Kumaran’s* anger. She tried to pacify Saravaṇā* in several ways but to no effect, more so because he knew that she possessed a soft heart for his elder brother, Gaṇeśa. Finally, she sang, “Thou art the fruit; The fruit of ultimate knowledge you embody; What other fruit are you seeking?” This stilled Senthil* into realizing his true self and immersing himself in meditation at the same spot.
He is still worshipped as Pazhanī* (Pazham + nee = thou art the fruit) right where his true self was brought to his cognition by Avvai.
***
When I was younger, I loved Gaṇeśa ‘winning the race’ because I was taken in by his simple humility to go around his parents while Subrahmaṇya* proudly mounted his peacock to encircle the universe. The moral idea of pride versus humility as absolute virtues was strong in me. The icing was the appeal of the parents, Śiva and Pārvati, being the entire universe in the eyes of a child. And what a sweet appeal that held for me!
As I grew a little older, I interpreted the story to mean that Śiva and Pārvati WERE the entire universe and, in recognizing them, Gaṇeśa was victorious over Murugan*, who was blind to this truth until it was too late.
A little into my early adulthood, I realised that Gaṇeśa was associated with gñana because of the direct approach to a problem while Murugan* took the more difficult path which, showing its inherent difficulty, with a possibility of failure, associated him with warfare.
I think of this story, among the earliest ones told to children, as one with a lot more to it than the above. And I am glad because it happens to still be one of my favourite stories! Here is my understanding at present –
Gaṇeśa, being Vigneśwara, had simply removed all hurdles and meditated single-mindedly (by circumambulating Śiva and Pārvati) to obtain Supreme Knowledge which was the fruit.
Mayilvāhanan* was outward bound. He was guided by his senses and went all around to conquer the world. At the end of it, despite him having fulfilled the condition set by his parents, he was unable to enjoy the fruit.
When Skanda* saw that Gaṇeśa had the mango, he was disappointed. He walked away, not wanting to be with either his parents or with Gaṇeśa. His desire to obtain the fruit of his action and the failure to have this fulfilled caused him to be disenchanted with Śiva and Pārvati, the source of Supreme Knowledge. He walked away, unmindful of his true Self.
Avvai was a Gaṇeśa bhakta. She would not hurry her pujai for Gaṇeśa even when Saint Sundarar and King Cheramān asked her to come along with them to Kailāsam and, instead, asked them to carry on while she completed her ritual as usual. Gaṇeśa was her iṣtadevata and she was Gaṇeśa’s favourite bhakta and he simply lifted her with his trunk and placed her in Kailāsam long before the other two arrived there!
Gaṇeśa caused Avvai to know the situation and got her to talk to Ārumugan*. When Avvai spoke to Bālaguru*, he was not in the frame of mind to listen to her and walked rigorously up a hillock wanting to put this old woman off-trail. She persisted in trying to make him understand. Then she sang, “Why do you seek the fruit when you yourself are the Divine Fruit of Knowledge?” This stilled Mayūravāhanan’s mind. He was reminded that no amount of external conquest or knowledge would amount to the great and assured knowledge that are possible by moving inward. He stood there, wearing his loin and holding his dandam, his forehead smeared with ashes and his eyes glistening with the awareness immersed in Śiva and Pārvati. He stands there as Palanī*, the young boy, who himself is the action and is also the ‘Fruit’ (Supreme Knowledge).
I am thrilled that this little story about a fight over a mango fruit is turning out to be a treasure chest for me. What else will unfold in time, I wonder…

I see this story differently. Shiva is energy. Shakti is Momentum.
The ‘fruit’ that they are giving is ‘Entropy’ (information, knowledge, jnAna). Who will get jnAna the entropy, when energy is added..?
Ganesha is potential energy which manifests as ‘phase-change energy’. Karthikeya is motional energy (Kinetic) which manifests as heat measured by temperature.
When energy is added to a system, it can manifest as potential (phase change energy) or manifest as heat (raise in temperature).
When it manifests as phase change energy, it breaks the bonds between molecules, changes the phase of matter and increases overall entropy (information content) of the system. This is what happens say when ice turns into water. Here energy is spent in increasing entropy as it manifests as potential (phase change) energy.
When it manifests as higher motional energy of molecules increasing the temperature of the system, energy is spent in increasing the temperature of the system and not the information content or entropy.
Hence Ganesha gets the jnAna and not kArthikeya.
Simplistically, if one gets additional energy, then they can use it to break their existing bonds, get into a new phase and thus increase their knowledge. That is like Ganesha.
They can also use it to simply get excited, jump up and down, raise their heat with little increase in their knowledge. That is like Karthikeya.
Who will get jnAna..? Obviously who are like Ganesha
Well explained from physical sciences pov. Thank you 🙂
Good analogy. Entropy is the measure of disorder in a closed system. Things tend to go from order to disorder unless energy is supplied externally to keep it in order. Thus entropy decreases with the kind of phase-change you suggest for Ganesha. Order increases.

I came to know so many names of Bhagwan Skand… Truly Amazing…
Humble thanks 🙂
What an Extra-Ordinary Re-Telling of The Epic… My Saashtaang Pranam unto You…
Brilliant Statement: “we have hundreds of re-tellings of our epics and classics and each one is a masterpiece by itself. We never tire of listening to the same stories from our itihāsas and our purānās over and over and over and over again.”
Thanks ince again for your kind words 🙂
No such confusion exists for those who follow திருமுருக கிருபானந்த வாரியார் and காஞ்சி மஹாசுவாமிகள்.
I am appalled at these ridiculous comparisons between Lord Vignesvara & Lord Subrahmanya.
Perhaps you could share some more…
Thank you for replying.
I am not that good at translating it into English . The import would get diluted.
Recently when I went to Chennai I was shocked to find all the precious Commentaries of
திருமுருக கிருபானந்த வாரியார் ( ThiruMuruga Krupanandha Vaariyar) are no longer available.
Reason given by the shopkeepers ‘ ” Not many can read Tamil…hence we do not stock them…out of print
…”.
It is the same with certain others books in Tamil . I searched everywhere. Could not find at all.
Contemporary people’s commentaries , audio CDs are very substandard.
Kaanchi MaHaPeriyava(r)’s Dheivathin Kural I am not sure if have been translated into English.
My old age & poor state of health are also additional factors in being unable to attempt to translate
into English & share with you.
Tamil Nadu has long been under the evil influence of dravidian politics aided by christian missionaries.
Many of our Spiritual Hymns were proscribed by vested interests. My father had purchased lot of
ThiruMuruga Krupanandha Vaariyar’s Commentaries ( they had Original Hymns along with word meanings & exhaustive footnotes etc etc) in the form of Books. Those days computers were unheard of.
We were living in Kolkata. My father was persecuted by many for turning to Spirituality. Lot of parasites in the guise of ‘relatives’ , neighbours stole / destroyed lot of his Collections. My brother & myself were also
branded ‘bipolar’ ‘ mental patients’ by psychiatrists for being drawn towards Spirituality.
Years later I managed to get hold of new prints on my visits to Chennai. They have many spelling mistakes. Index is missing.
It is highly possible christian mafia are busy appropriating them as their own. Like chrisstian yoga , christian bharathanatyam ….lot of Hindu Devotional Songs & Hymns did the Houdini for some years
only to come back as ”christian devotionals”.
Thank you for replying.

I have listened to Kripananda Variar’s Skanda puranam. He is an authority and one who wants to know Skanda Puranam cannot if they have not listened to Variar.
That said, may I know what in the story apalled you? What comes across as ridiculous comparisons between Murugan and Ganesha? I read through all your comments but nowhere have you specified what these are.
Thank you.
Since you have listened to ”Kripananda Variar’s Skanda puranam” I assume you must be knowing Tamil. Why not read what He has written about this ” Divine Mango” sharing story ?
I explained I cannot translate . Not just that. You have applauded another highly ridiculous comment
above ( Veda Bhasya) as ”well explained from physical sciences”.
The plane where science operates is different. Spirituality is ENTIRELY different.
The very tendency to EXPLAIN Spirituality through physics , chemistry ( matter energy etc) is heavily WRONG.
I repeat I AM appalled indeed.
>>The plane where science operates is different. Spirituality is ENTIRELY different.
Agree 100% with you, I am shocked at people trying to give scientific explanations/interpretations to Dharma even in this comments section.
heard the same comment from my auntie in chennai that old tamil publications of lot of hindu topics are not available – either they are not being reprinted or the copies have been bought out of circulation and destroyed [my guess by the dravidian/missionary forces.]
Thank God , you understand.
Right from my childhood I NEVER had this nasty tendency to demand ”scientific logical rational” explanations for our Nithya Anushtanams & for our Gods & Goddesses’ Forms etc etc. My Patrnal Grandparents also ( and many such Ancestors of ours) were sans this dangerous affliction of explaining everything through science , logic & mathematics.
Only today I find all the ponnadai grabbers calling themselves ஆன்மிக பேச்சாளர்கள் , சொல்லின் செல்வர் ( loosely translated various swollen headed Tamil speaking scholars , debaters , researchers etc of blighted Tamil Nadu who all admire GODDAMNED evr of dk & dmk thugs) & various aam janata passing out of IIT , IIM ( these two have aaaalways been swollen headed to start with…”Exceptions prove the rule”) are trying to explain away everything through science & logic.
Recently one BJP Minister was ridiculed for deservedly shooting down evolution theory of darwin by none other than quarter baked aravindan neelakandan who co authored some book by Rajiv Malhotra.
Science , logic etc etc ALL come under Maya. What is commonly called knowledge by majority is Ignorance / Avidhya by our Vedas.
You are right. All our Spiritual Scriptures & Texts , Devotional Songs have been stolen by evangelical mafia. Many resurface as ”christian devotionals”.
Tamil Language itself was wantonly mutilated by evr one of the worstest criminals a british christian agent.
Pristine Tamil sounds exactly like Sanskrit in several places. Once exposed to kollywood bastardized rowdy tamil , pristine Tamil would be impossible to understand. Here too crypto & converted christians calling themselves teachers etc ( all wanton strategy of christian mafia) have started writing books LYING ” we have evolved new methods of learning tamil through phonetics…blah blah.
Please read what Smt.Radha Rajan has written ( indiafacts) how OUR Tamil Language has been appropriated by christian missionaries through Aryan- Dravidian mendacity eventually leading to LTTE & genocide of Tamil speaking populace.
They did the same by giving the ”lemon kashmiriyat” . All genocides are due to christian mafia.
YET , I am shocked bjp screams ” sab ka saath sab ka vikas”. RSS full of ”duffers” ( Sita Ram Goel) is also the same multi culti appeasers infested outfit.
”The plane where science operates is different. Spirituality is ENTIRELY different”.
This TRUTH I owe to a BrahmaGyani , a Vedic Brahmin SEER .
திருமுருக கிருபானந்த வாரியார் repeatedly emphasizes it is a POMEGRANATE Fruit.
Not Mango as believed by many & told in the Tamil movie.
This particular movie also does not come up with the Truth while dealing with தருமி the Poet Blessed by Lord Ssiva & நக்கீரர்’s argument.
Movies have their own constraints I guess. But the HARM done by their hotch potch approach is incalculable.. So much so to this day many insolent quarter baked people keep repeating
”நெற்றிக்கண் திறந்தாலும் குற்றம் குற்றமே” as though நக்கீரர் won. One useless magazine vainly calls itself ‘nakkeeran”.
Not at all. நக்கீரர் realizes his mistake & undertakes Penance.
I came to know while listening to a Pravachanam in my youth.
Such precious Pravachanams heard have busted away lot of confusion & distortions.
This Tradition is to be kept alive.
Movies & tv serials seriously retard our thinking.
Krupanandha Vaariyar is not one of those run of the mill people. Who call themselves Tamil scholars but heavily politicized.
He was born to very pious Parents. He was taught everything by his own father. Entirely home schooled.
In addition to that Vaariyar Svamigal also knew cooking , an adept at playing the Veena endowed with
phenomenal knowledge. Quality wit & humour.
In Tamil we say ”ஆட்கொள்ளல்”. Roughly translated – Grace of Lord descending on a person.
It was Lord Muruga’s Grace that poured forth into him. He gave lots of Pravachans raising money all of which went towards Consecration of many Temples in Tamil Nadu.
I posted another detailed comment on re-telling of Epics . That has been deleted as ”spam”.
Re -tellings of our Ithihasams & Puranams are fraught with many dangers.
For instance Valmiki Ramayanam is the Original.
So
called ”Lakshman Rekha” never took place. Still majority keep
repeating ”Lakshman Rekha” even while discussing mundane matters.
Majority become incapable , unwilling to unlearn & relearn.
Similarly the Tamil movie ‘Karnan’ has also taken unwarranted liberties. It shows ‘Dharma Devathai’ rushing to the rescue
of Karnan ( played by Sivaji Ganesan) & all Arrows piercing his body turning into Marigold garlands.
It is only through Svami Dayanandha of Arsha Vidhya Gurukulam I came to know the exact exchange of words between
Lord Krishna & slain Karnan.
Similarly குசேலர் & பரீக்ஷித் மஹராஜ் ( Kuchelar & Parikshit Maharaj)’s stories also have been grossly distorted
by many in Tamil Nadu. Many more instances abound.
Similarly the true story of Ahalya has been brilliantly explained by Kaanchi MaHaPeriyava(r).
Many
ill informed womenfolk ( who happen to be Tamil Professors etc) gave
totally distorted explanations in their discourses. That Lord RAMA
”upbraided” Sage Gauthamar for being harsh on his wife Ahalya &
that she was cheated by
Devendhran.
Out & out atrocious .
Serendipitously
I came across Kaanchi MaHaPeriyavar’s detailed account wherein he also
mentions the incalculable HARM done by distortions & political
correctness.
Sage Gauthamar is one of the UNIMPEACHABLE Devotees
of Lord Parameshvara. This truth has been repeatedly emphasized by
Ramana Bhagavan Himself. And that Ahalya was not converted into a
”stone”. ”A stone cannot ruminate & so Prayaschitham cannot take
place….Gauthama Rishi ALSO undertakes penance along with Ahalya…does
not abandon
or curse her …..”.
AFTER Ahalya’s Prayaschitham
& Penance she & Gauthama Rishi give birth to a Daughter called
Anjanakshi who gives birth to Aanjaneyaar ( Lord Sri.Hanuman).
To understand & marvel we need to extricate our intellect from linear concept of Time.
Whereas
good for nothing people continue to persist in fixing time & date
of births for Very ParaBrahman manifesting as Lord Rama & Krishna ,
Time & date of Birth for Sri.Aadhi Ssankarar & so on.
